Skyfall Research

As the James Bond franchise has such a big budget, there was a lot of marketing and advertising for it. Here are some of the things that I noticed:

TV TRAILERS:
Here are two of the TV trailers I saw on ad breaks while watching TV:

FULL TRAILER:

POSTERS:

BILLBOARDS:

APPS:
Although there were no official Skyfall apps in the Apple App Store, there was one that was created in collaboration with EON Productions (the production company behind Skyfall).
The fact that there were no official apps shows us that Skyfall is not particularly aimed at youths, and rather it is aimed at older people.

ADELE'S PROMOTIONAL SINGLE:
This was a particularly good use of cross-media convergence to promote Skyfall.
Adele is a very well known singer with many fans and so her single reached millions of people worldwide through radio, TV and the internet, and so in turn, the Skyfall movie was adevrtised to millions of people worldwide.
The single peaked at #2 in the UK Singles Chart and has proven to be Adele's most popular yet according to iTunes. I noticed when I was flicking through music TV channels that it was being played a lot on different channels, often simultaneously.

 CINEMAS:
As Skyfall is probably the most popular film this year, cinemas were advertising it more than any other film. There were lots of posters and information about the film, ticket machines had Skyfall as the background image, and there were Skyfall related promotions on.
Skyfall also had the most film showing times of any film in my local cinema, and was one of Vue's most popular films according to the website.
At my local cinema, there were 'adult only' screenings of Skyfall. This shows us that Skyfall was mainly aimed at an older audience.

INTERNET:
The internet is a very powerful tool in marketing films as it reaches millions of people across the world and costs nothing. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube were used to advertise Skyfall. The Sony YouTube channel 'SonyPicsUK' had many Skyfall related videos posted, including trailers and video blogs.
However, there was not a particularly heavy internet presence. This is because Skyfall was not aimed at the young 'internet generation'.

Here are two of the video blogs from the 'SonyPicsUK' YouTube channel:

GAME:
There is a Skyfall Motorbike Chase game that can be played on iPhones and Android phones. On the 'SonyPicsUK' YouTube channel there was a link to a QR code, which once scanned, directs your phone to the web URL that hosts the game. This is a very clever use of technology to market the film.

Cross Media convergence and Synergy implemented for Skyfall

Skyfall

“Cross-media convergence and synergy are vital processes in the successful marketing of Skyfall media products to audiences”

I concur totally with the statement stated above. Both synergy and cross media convergence play an equal role in aiding films to produce far more revenue than normal. Synergy is defined as the interaction between two or more organisations to produce a combined effect greater than what could be achieved on their own. In contrast cross media convergence is where a media product is promoted across other media platforms. In Skyfall’s case the movie was promoted via a music track (Adele’s song Skyfall) and vice versa.

Synergy implemented for Skyfall

The use of synergy was very effective for the movie Skyfall. Synergy enabled Skyfall to become more established within the movie industry, generating more public awareness. An example of synergy is Adele’s newly released song ‘Skyfall’ which is used to promote the new James Bond movie also known as Skyfall. This active use of synergy to promote from one platform to another is clearly evident. Any fan of the James Bond series will be more inclined to check out Adele’s single, and fans of Adele are also inclined to check out the James Bond Skyfall, so it benefits both parties. In some respects the song incorporated such a valued commodity of the Bond series, and that is Bond’s motif. The soundtrack which plays usually at the beginning of the movie is used to manipulate the audience’s feelings because we all know as soon as we hear that, something good, energetic and ebullient is going to transpire.  Synergy doesn’t have to be the combined forces of a media product; it can range from anything; like McDonalds promoting Skyfall merchandise.

How has Sony cross promoted Skyfall across other subsidiaries of the media conglomerate?
Sony has promoted Skyfall on a plethora of media conventions, from television to social networks, the internet, merchandise etc. They have used every platform available to publicise the film in which doing so enables them to become more successful. The means of making a film more established to the public can ensure maximum public awareness.

Another example of synergy used within another film would be the Twilight saga breaking dawn part 1 were Bruno Mars’s song ‘it will rain’ was used to help promote the film and of course vice versa.

In my opinion i feel the use of synergy and cross media convergence to be exceedingly effective. Although cross media convergence seems to have a greater effect first off because of the augment in promotion via the same form of platform...media. Seeing that synergy is predominately effective once the film has been established only then does synergy have an impact.
