Scream swede research

As part of my research I watched some scream spoofs/swedes and I found this one the funniest. It was clever that they didn't have the typical story line of scream catching and killing the victim.

Production - Avatar

There are an array of stages involved in the making of a film, they are as followed; Development, pre-production, production and distribution.

This presentation aims to boost your perspicacity on the most fundamental aspects of film based on my favourite movie... AVATAR!!

Development

In this stage, the project's producer selects a story, which may come from a book, play, another film, a true story, original idea, etc. After identifying a theme or underlying message, the producer works with writers to prepare a synopsis. Next they produce a step outline, which breaks the story down into one-paragraph scenes that concentrate on dramatic structure. Then, they prepare a treatment, a 25-to-30-page description of the story, its mood, and characters. This usually has little dialogue and stage direction, but often contains drawings that help visualize key points. Another way is to produce a scriptment once a synopsis is produced.

Pre-production

In pre-production, every step of actually creating the film is carefully designed and planned. The production company is created and a production office established. The production is storyboarded and visualized with the help of illustrators and concept artists. A production budget is drawn up to plan expenditures for the film. For major productions, insurance is procured to protect against accidents.

The producer hires a crew. The nature of the film, and the budget, determine the size and type of crew used during filmmaking. Many Hollywood blockbusters employ a cast and crew of hundreds, while a low budget, independent film The unit production manager may be made by a skeleton crew of eight or nine (or fewer). These are typical crew positions:

       The director

       The assistant director

       The casting director

       The director of photography

       The director of autography

       The production sound mixer

       The sound designer

       The production designer

       The art director

       The costume designer

       The choreographer

       Production

In production, the video production/film is created and shot. More crew will be recruited at this stage, such as the property master, script supervisor, assistant directors, stills photographer, picture editor, and sound editors. These are just the most common roles in filmmaking; the production office will be free to create any unique blend of roles to suit the various responsibilities possible during the production of a film. A typical day's shooting begins with the crew arriving on the set/location by their call time. Actors usually have their own separate call times. Since set construction, dressing and lighting can take many hours or even days, they are often set up in advance.

Post-production

Here the video/film is assembled by the video/film editor. The modern use of video in the filmmaking process has resulted in two workflow variants: one using entirely film, and the other using a mixture of film and video.

This is the final stage, where the film is released to cinemas or, occasionally, to consumer media (DVD, VCD, VHS, Blu-ray) or direct download from a provider. The film is duplicated as required for distribution to cinemas. Press kits, posters, and other advertising materials are published and the film is advertised and promoted.

Marketing

There were various marketing strategies that made the film the highest grossing film ever.

James Cameron envisioned customizing the release so that every viewer in every theatre got the best possible experience. There are a lot of vagaries when it comes to public exhibition, for example screens are different sizes, different formats, and technologies involving 3-D. So they did a customised release (which has never been done before) where ever you went, the theatre was going to get the perfect cinema package to ensure you were going to get the best possible screening, best possible experience of watching Avatar.  James Cameron and his army of people who created Avatar wanted to deliver a perfect experience, so by customizing the release that came true. This proved very profitable too, as Avatar climbed to the top of the highest grossing film ever, he topped himself once again topping his own film ‘Titanic’ as he proclaimed after winning the award for Titanic “I’m king of the world” a line from the film, he has de-topped himself.

Avatar was finally released on DVD in April 2010, does not contain any supplemental features other than the theatrical film and the disc menu in favor of and to make space for adjusting picture and sound. On November 16th 2010 the three disc extended collector’s edition of avatar was released. This included Three different versions of the film are present on the discs: the original theatrical cut, the special edition cut, and a collector's extended cut (with the DVD set spreading them on two discs, but the Blu-ray set presenting them on a single disc). The collector's extended cut contains 6 more minutes of footage, thus making it 16 minutes longer than the original theatrical cut. It also included an in-depth making into the film Avatar, 4 hours of never before seen footage.

Exhibition

Films can be viewed in Cinemas, purchasing a copy of the DVD, Films can be watched on TV and now the ability to download movies online are becoming more prominent.

Production, Distribution and Exhibition

Production, Distribution and Exhibition

Production
- Production involves the actual shooting, which, on average, takes eight weeks.
-  Camera angles, lighting and sound are chosen for each shot.
At the start of each shot, the camera operator films a slate, which is a board that has digital numbers that allow every frame of film to be uniquely identified at twenty-four frames per second. The audio recorder, on an inaudible track, records corresponding numerical information. When the assistant editor synchronizes the sound to the picture, he or she locates the frame with the first frozen slate number, and the tape player automatically locates the portion of sound tape with the matching numbers. The picture and sound remain in synchronization to the end of the shot. This process is repeated for each shot, and thousands of shots are filmed before the completion of a film.
Usually, a shot is filmed more than once to improve on either a technical element or the performance. Once an acceptable take is made, the crew sets up and rehearses the next shot. Even a simple scene might be covered in four different angles, allowing for creative choices in the editing process.

Distribution
Distribution includes the part of the industry that gets the movie from the studio to the theatre. The distribution of a film is the process through which a movie is made available to watch for an audience by a film distributor. This is done in a variety of ways, for example, with a theatrical release, a home entertainment release (DVD-video or Blu-ray Disc) or a television program.

Exhibition
There are many ways in which audiences can see films, for example, through the cinema or theatre, online, by purchasing blu-ray or Dvd and also at home through film renting or purchasing.

PRODUCTION
The main stages involved in producing a film are:
Development Stage:
Development stage is where a story outline is developed into a feasible script. A detailed screenplay will then be written with minute details of the characters, situations and overall style. Process involved in developing the screenplay is called as script coverage. With the detailed screenplay a potential financier will be approached. When the financier is impressed with the screenplay they agree to give the financial backing for the production of the movie.
Pre-production Stage:
In the pre-production stage, the movie is crafted in detail and a production budget is drawn. It is in this stage the producer hire the crew whose team size depends on the budget of the movie. Big budget movies will have a crew of nearly hundred members where as low budget movie will engage a ten or even less number of crews. The director, assistant director, art director, choreographer, cinematographer, music composer and music director are the main members of the crew.
Production Stage:
Next is the production stage where the film is created and then shot. In this stage the production office recruits more crew members like the property masters, script supervisors, still photographers, sound editors and so on. During this stage the whole unit will be busy, as the crew will be preparing their equipment, actors will be rehearsing the script and discussing with the director, etc. It is a custom widely followed to have a wrap party at the end of the project to thank one and all of the crew teams.
Post-Production Stage:
In the Post-Production stage it is mainly the editor who plays a key role. It is the film editor who assembles the film. The film editor first builds a rough sketch from different scenes or sequences based on individual shots. In the next step, the process of trimming a few minutes or seconds is done to create a professional cut of all shots to make it flow smoothly. After this the producer and director approval will be sought. The locked picture is passed on to develop the sound track to the sound track department. Voice recordings and the ultimate sound mix are created.
Distribution Stage:
Distribution is the final stage, when the movies are released for the public. Copies of the movie are taken for distribution to theatre’s. The movie is publicized with wall posters, TV commercials, press kits etc. Usually the movie will be released with a press releases, launch party, and preview for the press. Rights for distribution of the movie worldwide and in DVD will be sold to a single person/company or different persons/companies.

EXHIBITION
Today there are many ways for us to engage in films for we can: go to the local cinema and watch a film, purchase a dvd copy of a film that has already been released in cinema, watch film on TV channels such as sky movies or film 4 or regular channels like channel 1 etc., also we can download film onto our laptops consoles or smart phones (illegally) before they are even released in the cinema.

DISTRIBUTION
One way that a film gets from the edit house to is a straight to video release. A straight to video release occurs when a movie is released on home video formats without being released in theatre’s first, thereby not taking into consideration the "theatrical window"  another way in which films are distributed is standard release which is when a film is released in the cinema or theatre then approximately 17 weeks is released on DVD and after an additional amount of months is released on pay TV such as sky movies on demand finally two years after the film’s release date it is made available for free on TV

The interview with the star of the movie!!

Here is the list of questions that i asked the leading star (Hussam Chowdhury):

Radio interview with the star of the movie

1.      How well did you think you did in your performance?

2.      Do you feel you were able to emulate the characters mannerisms through your performance?

If so how were you able to portray them?

3.      How was it for you to take on the responsibility of being the star the show?

4.      How did you incorporate your ebullience and enthusiasm into the character?

5.      How were you able to liaise with the other characters in the film?

6.      Through your performance how were you able to get across the eeriness of your character?

7.      Through the use of props, how did you incorporate them into your interim to create a sense of reality?

8.      How much do you draw on your own experience when you act?

Swede Research

I looked through some swedes of Scream on YouTube and came across quite a few interesting examples and gained some ideas for my groups own swede of Scream.

This is the swede that I enjoyed most. I liked the really over-exagerated, comic American accents of the actors and they way that the characters and Scream were friendly to each other until the characters realised that they were supposed to be scared of Scream. Another thing I liked is when the lighter didn't work so Scream asked the camera-person if they had a lighter. We could consider doing something like this with props in our swede.

The use of a toilet-plunger for a weapon was very funny and we should definitely consider using ridiculous prop-replacements like this, and the way someone shouted 'We can clearly see the blood is ketchup' was a good informality.

Overall, the swede was extremely informal and jokey, and we definitely need to have this element in our swede.

Our swede in the making

Production, Distribution, Marketing & Exhibition

Production

The 3 main stages of production:
1. Pre-production - Planning, scripting, storyboarding etc.
2. Production - Shooting, recording etc.
3. Post-poduction - Everything between production and creating the final master-copy.

Distribution

The stages of distribution:
1. The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
2. The distribution company determines hoe many copies of the film to make.
3. The distribution company show the movie to prospective buyers representing cinemas.
4. The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they want to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
5. The cinema shows the movie for a specified number of weeks.

Marketing

There are plenty of ways to market a film, inlcuding: trailers on the internet, adverts on busses, billboard & TV, social networking (Facebook pages & Twitter hashtags).

Different types of films are marketed to different audiences. For example, action films are mainly marketed at young males, and romantic comedy films are mainly marketed at females. Certain aspects of a film that may appeal to a certain audience will be exaggerated for marketing purposes.

Exhibition

Nowadays, poeple watch films in lots of different ways. There is of course the traditional cinema way, but many poeple now prefer to watch films in the comfort of their own home, at their own pace, and so watch them on the internet through services such as Love Film, Netfilx, iTunes and on other websites through downloading or streaming. Films can also be rented in both physical and streaming format, and can be bought in DVD/BluRay and download format for those who prefer home-cinema. Films can also be watched on BBCiPlayer and YouTube amongst other sites on watched on TV.
